B Unnikrishnan not to continue as FEFCA General Secretary

Director B Unnikrishnan would not be continuing as the General Secretary of FEFCA any more. Unnikrishnan made his decision clear at the General Body meeting of the association that was held at Kochi. He said he was resigning from the post since he believed that an association should not centre around an individual. He also added that he would continue to be an active member of the association. Unnikrishnan had been involved in the activities of FEFCA, and had recently been involved in a controversy regarding a spat that the association had with actor Thilakan. Director Biju Varkey attacked

Director Biju Varkey was admitted to the hospital yesterday with injuries, after being attacked by a group of men. Biju was beaten up by these men at around 7.30 in the evening at a lodge at Perumbavoor yesterday. Biju has been admitted to a private hospital and has suffered a fracture on his left leg. Biju was involved with the script work of a film of his friend Snehajith. Joseph said Tuesday that the bank is more than 81 years old and hence for it Mammootty is quite young. We are the only bank in South India which has a brand ambassador. Through Mammootty we have received a huge boost. Every time I go to Middle East, there are numerous requests at our customer meetings, to bring Mammootty for one such meeting, said Joseph. On Tuesday, the SIB inked an agreement with Hatton National Bank (HNB), the largest private sector bank in Sri Lanka, for exchange of expertise and services. Rajendra Theagarajah, managing director of HNB who signed the MoU, said Mammootty is popular in Sri Lanka too. Star, directed by Sanjeev Raj has started its shoot at Cochin. The film has Kalabhavan Mani and Dileep in the main roles. While Mani plays Superstar Suryakiran, Dileep would play Nandagopan, a young script writer. The film deals with the incidents that happen after the film star meets the writer, and thus would unfold the story behind cinema. The film would have two heroines; Rambha and Muktha. Earlier it was rumored that Navya Nair would be essaying a role in the film. However, now Muktha has replaced Navya in the film. Suresh Babu, who had earlier scripted films like Thandavam and Dadasahib would be writing the script of Film Star. Christian Brothers pushed to July 9

Mega director Joshis multi-starrer big budget film Christian Brothers featuring Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Sarath Kumar, Dileep, Kavya Madhavan and Lakshmi Rai has postponed it�s release. Christian Brothers was to release along with Mammootty�s multi- starrer Pokkiri Raja on April 30, as the big summer releases. But now Mohanlal�s action movie has been pushed to July 9. A song has to be picturised on Mohanlal and Lakshmi Rai in Scotland, and the best time to picturise the song is May, when summer begins and ice melts in those parts of the world. A few more combination scenes of the main artists have to be shot hence the delay.

Directed by debutante director Vaisakh, this is expected to be a colorful entertainer that would keep fans clapping away to glory. Christian Brothers on the other hand is directed by Joshey, who has managed to maintain an impressive track record, when it comes to delivering hits. And it has a major starcast that boasts of screen titans as Mohanlal, Suresh Gopi, Dileep and Sarath Kumar along with Laxmi Rai, Kaniha and Kavya Madhavan. It might be just a coincidence that both these films have been scripted by the script writer duo Siby K Thomas and Uday Krishna. We would have to wait till the 30th of April to find out which film of the two would emerge the winner at the box office.

\\Opposition to Bachchan as Kerala tourism ambassador : Minister

A week after Amitabh Bachchan accepted Keralas request to become the states brand ambassador to promote tourism, the move is apparently facing stiff opposition. I would not like to name those who have expressed their displeasure in inviting Big B to promote Kerala tourism. A few social and cultural personalities have said that this should not be done, Kerala Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan told IANS. Stiff opposition to this has also come from Delhi and that has surprised many of us, he said. But he did not elaborate as to who were opposing his appointment. Big B was in the state for a few functions last month. It was during an interview to a TV channel that the actor said he would gladly accept the offer to become Kerala tourisms brand ambassador. Soon after, the Kerala Tourism wrote to him and also received his acceptance letter. What I am told is that in the past also efforts were made to rope in the superstar but it did not materialise because of the hefty professional charges that was asked. Megastar is planning a month-long break from acting

After a rocking 2009 which saw eight Mammootty films being released, the Malayalam superstar is now planning a month-long break from acting. It could be within the country or outside or both. I feel a break would do a world of good to me so I can be back fresh. All work and no rest is tiring, Mammootty told. The year 2009 was excellent for the actor with eight releases and a variety of roles, besides an honorary doctorate from the Kerala University. But 2010 began on a sour note with Dhrona bombing at the box office and a public spat with actor Thilakan. The stand-off led to Thilakan being suspended from the Kerala artists association. Lots of things have been said and unsaid on the issue. I wish to keep mum and what I have to say I will within the four walls of our organization, said Mammootty. But Mammootty has put the year gone behind him. He is now looking forward to the release of his latest film Pramani March 26. superstar Mohanlal was going through a rough patch sometime back. Veteran actor Thilakan was on a crusade against Mammootty and him and accused them of scuttling his film career. A smear campaign unleashed against Mohanlal, the general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes (AMMA), by Thilakan even got the support of Sukumar Azhikode, well-known writer and orator. However now, the campaign against the star has died down and Mohanlal has emerged a winner. The tide has changed for the actor as a university in Kerala is set to confer a honorary doctorate on him tomorrow. Mohanlal will be given a D Litt, for his contributions to Indian cinema. Thats not all; the star, who was given the honorary title of Lieutenant Colonel in a special ceremony at the office of the Ministry of Defense last year, will start his army training towards the end of the month. Mohanlal, speaking on the sets of his new film titled Oru Naal Varum (A Day Will Come), said, �I�m honoured to be conferred a doctorate. Cinema has given me everything in life and I will continue acting till the end. This movie, written by noted writer, director and actor Sreenivasan and directed by TK Rajiv Kumar, also marks the coming together of the successful combination of Mohanlal and Sreenivasan. In the movie, Sreenivasan plays a corrupt Town Planning Officer, who tries to demolish a house built by Mohanlal. Sameera Reddy plays Mohanlal�s wife, an IT professional. About being cast as one of Priyanka Chopra�s seven husbands in Vishal Bhardwaj�s next film Saath Khoon Maaf (which is said to be based on Ruskin Bond�s Susanna�s Seven Husbands), Mohanlal said, �I would have loved to do the film. Jayaram, who is currently riding high on the success of his latest film Happy Husbands, says he has never tried to assume a demigod image, since he knows that the audience wouldnt accept him in such a role. In an interview given to a prominent weekly, the actor said that the viewers have always preferred to see him in the role of a layman. Probably as a result of this, wherever he goes for shooting, the people treat him as a member of their own family. They never treat him as Jayaram, the actor. The makers of Dam 999 have come to a compromise with actor Thilakan by paying him a compensation of four lakh ninety five thousand rupees. This decision was reached at, after a meeting between Thilakan, Sohan Roy and representatives of the MACTA Federation. Thilakan had demanded for a compensation for being thrown out of the film. Thilakan had earlier in the day led a march along with members of the MACTA Federation to the shooting location. Sources in Tamil Nadu have revealed that Ranjitha tried to kill herself over the sex scandal, which has snowballed into a major controversy with all the media attention. The actress, who has also acted in Telugu movies such as Maavichiguru and Sriramulayya, was married to a army man. She is now a divorcee. There are rumours that Ranjitha herself created the tape to blackmail the spiritual leader. Ranjitha intended to marry Nithyananda Swami

Lured by the charisma of Nithyananda Swamiji, Tamil film actress Ranjitha seemed to be keen on getting married to him. When that idea proved not feasible, she joined hands with Lenin Kuruppan, car driver of the Swamiji, to get her intimate scenes with the Swamiji secretly videographed to blackmail the Swamiji, according to sources. Ranjitha was learnt to have been introduced to the Swamiji by one Sudha, an ardent devotee of the Ashram and daughter-in-law of senior actress K.R. Vijaya about three years ago. From then on Ranjitha began visiting the Ashram often. Being estranged from her husband, an army officer, Ranjitha sought solace from the Swamiji but slowly fell for his charisma and even had decided to shift from Chennai to Bangalore, according to sources. Getting closer to the Swamiji day-by-day, Ranjitha raised the topic to get married to the Swamiji. At one stage she had even cited the example of Vidyabhushan Swamiji of Udupi Mutt who had renounced sainthood to tie the knot. Extremely confident of convincing the Swamiji, Ranjitha wanted to snap her ties with her husband Rakesh Menon and their divorce case was lying in the court. Surprisingly, even Lenin Kuruppan was quite close to Ranjitha referring her as sister-in-law. AMMA gives Thilakan another chance

The Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) Monday decided to give actor Thilakan one more chance to appear before them to sort out issues after he was suspended for indiscipline. Thilakan was suspended last Monday from AMMA following his tirade against the association and other senior actors. On March 1, after he failed to appear before the AMMA disciplinary committee, it asked Thilakan to appear before it latest by Monday, which he did not do. Addressing reporters after the five-member disciplinary committee met here, AMMA general secretary and superstar Mohanlal said the associaion has no intention to oust the veteran actor from AMMA. Thilakan is one of the senior most members of our family and we have nothing against him and we have no intention of ousting him. We have decided to give him one more chance to sort out issues. He can come before the executive committee and we are prepared for a personal hearing. And if need be, if he so desires, one of us is prepared to go and meet him also, Mohanlal said. Meanwhile, reacting to the AMMA decision, Thilakan said that if it is to be an honourable meeting then he will cooperate. Maybe they have realized that, it is not that easy to throw me out because I will not simply sit. If need be, I will stage a protest against ousting me...and seek compensation, Thilakan said. The entire issue started when he was dropped after he was signed and paid advance to act in the film Christian Brothers. He claims that he was dropped after a superstar put pressure on the director to drop him. There are two superstars in Malayalam films, Mammootty and Mohanlal. 82nd Annual Academy Awards Winners announced

The 82nd annual Oscars have wrapped up for another year, and the big winner is The Hurt Locker.

The film took home six awards, most notably for Best Picture. Kathryn Bigelow won for Best Director, making her the first woman to win that particular award in Oscar history.

She beat out ex-husband James Cameron, who was nominated for Avatar.

The picture also took home awards for Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and two in the sound category: Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

The major winners in the actor category were Jeff Bridges for Best Actor in Crazy Heart, and Christoph Waltz, for Best Supporting Actor in Inglourious Basterds.

The Best Actress award went to Sandra Bullock for her role in The Blind Side.

Despite Avatar having nine nominations, they only earned three awards: Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects.

Other notable winners?

Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire: MoNique won for Best Supporting Actress, and the film won for Best Adapted Screenplay. And Up has taken home two as well: One for Best Animated Feature and another for Best Original Score.

Awards were given out to Music by Prudence in the Best Documentary (Short Subject) category, to Star Trek for Best Makeup, to Logorama for Best Short Film (Animated), and to The Weary Kind (Theme from Crazy Heart) won for Best Music (Original Song)..

Charmi files case against TV channel

Thilakan to offer explanation to AMMA

Thilakan who has been asked by AMMA to offer an explanation for the controversy that he had generated in the last few weeks would do so today. Thilakan is reported to offer an explanation through a special messenger to AMMA. The allegations that the actor had levelled against the association have been several. Thilakan had lashed out against AMMA, alleging that it was a mafia organisation. He had also lashed out against the superstars saying that one superstar in particular was against his being thrown out of the Joshey film Christian Brothers. Mohanlal to start his training

Lt. Col. Mohanlal would arrive at Kannur on the 24th of this month to start his training. Mohanlal was made Lieutenant Colonel at a special ceremony at the office of the Defence Ministry last year. The actor had also taken part in the parade at New Delhi on the 19th of October last year. After three days of preliminary training the actor would have to go through a month of army training as well. Mohanlal would receive training in using machine guns and even in the unearthing and defusing of landmines. Colonel in the Territorial Army, for an explanation. \"Just because he has acted in a few films as an army officer he was commissioned into the TA battalion. And now he uses that (his uniform) to sell jewellery. Antony owes an explanation for this,\" Azhikode told reporters here. Short Film Fest of Kerala in June

Come June and the city will host the third Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala. The festival, being organised by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy for the State Cultural Affairs Department, will begin on June 11 and continue till June 15.

Aimed at catalysing a vibrant documentary and short film movement in the State, the festival would reflect the exploding nature of the visual medium in its many facets of creativity and resistance.

As part of the festival, there will be a national-level competition for long documentaries, short documentaries, animation and short fiction films produced in India between May 1, 2009 and April 25, 2010. The last date for sending in entries for the festival is May 5, 2010.

What�s more, there will even be a Campus Films Competition for films produced by students from educational institutions in the State, above the higher secondary level. The films will have to be 20 minutes or less in duration. The director of the film has to be above 18 years at the time of production. The best campus film will bring a cash prize of Rs 20,000 and a certificate to the creative team.

As the visual media is now used by image-makers from all walks of life to express, experiment, learn and as an effective tool to conscientise and bring about social change, a director or production company may enter more than one film, provided a separate entry form accompanies each film.

However, all non-English-speaking projects must have English subtitles.

The Kerala State Chalachitra Academy will appoint a selection committee consisting of eminent persons, including filmmakers and others from different fields. No person with any involvement in the films will be present on the selection committee.

The best long documentary (40 minutes and above) will get a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh and a certificate. The best short documentary, with a length of less than 40 minutes, will bag a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a certificate. The best Short Fiction (under 70 minutes) also gets a cash prize of Rs 50,000 and a certificate. The best animation and the best music video will each get a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and a certificate.

Kerala film crisis turns into ugly spat between writer, superstar !

The controversy following the removal of thespian Thilakan from Mohanlal-starrer Christian Brothers has unfolded into a no-holds-barred slanging match involving writers and matinee idols in the state. To add fuel to the fire, fans associations too have hit the streets pledging solidarity with their stars and burning the effigies of those opposing them. Earlier, AITUC, the trade union wing of the CPI, had declared its support for Thilakan �as the issue concerned a worker�s job security�. Soon, noted writers and Left sympathisers M Mukundan and Sukumar Azhikode jumped into the fray, saying editing out Thilakan was unfair. Mukundan retreated after one sortie, but Azhikode did not. Backing Thilakan, Azhikode mounted an attack on Mohanlal and Mammooty, who have dominated the Malayalam film industry for 25 years. The writer, however, did not mind offering his services to settle the differences between the industry and Thilakan. Irritated over Azhikode�s interference, Mohanlal squarely told the writer to keep away from the industry matters.

Megastar Mammootty Saturday tried to make peace with Thilakan by saying he never called for a ban on the veteran actor in the industry and is willing to work with him. \"I have nothing against Thilakan and will certainly act with him. The issue with Thilakan will be resolved by AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movies Artistes) soon. We never called for a ban of Thilakan. We will make no public statements in this regard and we are not interested in a media trial either,\" Mammootty said. Thilakan is in dispute with various film workers organisations, including the AMMA, for his utterances against some superstars and select directors. He replied to a show-cause notice from the AMMA, saying he has done no wrong and the question of an apology does not arise. The dispute led to a public slugfest with both sides taking a dig at each other. Noted critic Sukumar Azhikode slammed superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal and asked them to stop acting and endorsing jewellery brands. Azhikode said the two superstars should call it a day and remarked that if both of them come without make up, many people will faint. To this AMMA president and comic actor Innocent retorted that if Azhikode is to endorse jewellery brands then people who buy it will return them. Mammootty, trying to bring peace between two sides said since Thilakan expressed his inability to appear before AMMA March 1, then the movie association will give a new date set according to the actors convenience. \"Thilakan is an elder statesman of our fraternity and instead of keeping away from AMMA, he should be the guiding force to all of us,\" said Mammootty. Reacting to Mammoottys statement, Thilakan said: \"Honestly I have nothing against Mammootty and Mohanlal and I do respect their talents. I will talk to Mammootty if he calls me.\"

\"Am suspected Ganesh Kumar is behind the people who attacked me: Thilakan

Thilakan said that he suspected K B Ganesh Kumar MLA to be behind the people who attacked him at Pathanapuram. Thilakan was speaking to members of the press at Cherthala. Thilakan said that it was a person who claimed that he was Ganesh Kumar\'s personal assistant who had hurled abuses at him, and who had attempted to manhandle him. Thilakan said that he has just responded to Ganesh\'s comments that it was not right on Thilakan\'s part to speak against AMMA since he was getting a pension from the association. In reality, he hasn\'t received any money from AMMA for the past one and half years. It was regarding this matter that he had spoken at Pathanapuram. Thilakan also supported Azhikode yesterday and said that the general public held him in high esteem. Those who were abusing Azhikode will be despised by the public. He also said that he had nothing to say about Innocent who claimed to have understood nothing after reading Azhikode\'s books.

\"Am very well aware of what people were saying about Azhikode\" :Mohanlal

Superstar Mohanlal said on Wednesday that he was very well aware of what people were saying about Azhikode. He was talking to members of the media, after Azhikode relaunched his attacks on the star yesterday. Mohanlal said that he had not used the term ayaal in a derogatory sense while referring to Azhikode. The word simply means that person. Azhikode who is a literary genius should be well aware of its meaning. Mohanlal also took offence to Azhikodes comments on the stars driver having turned into a producer. Lal said that every job has a dignity. There is not much of a use in merely writing forty books. What one should really learn is to behave well with other people. Mohanlal concluded by saying that he has erased Sukumar Azhikode from his mind.

Innocent is not innocent as a man: Azhikode

Sukumar Azhikode aimed his guns at actor Innocent the other day, when he said that Innocent was not as innocent as he seems. He said the dictionary also attributes other meanings to the word innocent; like one who has no sense, for instance. The actor is just proving that he is living up to the meaning of his name. Azhikode was interacting with the media at a press conference at Kozhikode. Innocent had requested Azhikode to refrain from getting involved from the Thilakan controversy and to stay at home chanting the raam naam. Azhikode said it just proved Innocents senselessness further when he made this comment. Its not old people who chant the raam naam, but people with faith in their hearts. Gandhiji used to chant the raam naam because he was a believer in Raam. Azhikode also said Innocent had no right to ask him to keep his mouth shut. He would continue to express his opinion as long as the Indian Constitution exists. \"I have always criticized the wrong. I had done this from the time, when I was twelve, and I would continue doing so,\" Azhikode added. Azhikode also made fun of Innocent for having suggested that his language was bad. He said Innocent was the second person who said so. The firs person was Kuttikrishna Marar. On Marars advice he had tried to improve his language, that has become a good one. However during the last week, it has deteriorated again, because of his interactions with people like Innocent. Azhikode also said it was false to say that he charged for his speeches. He just charged for transportation and nothing else. On an average he gets around hundred invitations per month to speak, and reduces it to about thirty. If he were to charge for his speeches, he would have long become a billionaire.

Sukumar Azhikode on Wednesday launched a new array of attacks against Superstar Mohanlal, in retaliation to Mohanlals interactions with the media personnel the other day. Azhikode alleged that Mohanlal was repeating what he was saying because of his frantic attempts to regain his fast disappearing youth. Azhikode said that Mohanlal doesnt have an idea about the nations culture. Its the belief that he is the prince of showbiz that is leading the star. People will get to see the real star, if he removes his wig, Azhikode added sarcastically. The orator said that it was not just enough that there was goodness in the characters that the star portrays. There should atleast be an iota of goodness in the heart as well. \"Mohanlals films will end when he stops acting. However my forty books, that are a reflection of my soul, will stand the tests of time,\" Azhikode said. Azhikode also said that Mohanlal should not brand him as one who didnt see films. Because the acceptance that the star has got is the acceptance for buffoonery. He has had enough seeing such films, and he also said that he considered himself lucky that he did not have to see more. When asked about fans associations, Azhikode said that they were a kind of mafia organizations. He also lashed out against K B Ganesh Kumar and said that his intelligence was not developed enough to question Azhikodes excellence.
